Life Shines in the Darkness

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5).

Throughout the Bible, light represents aspects of goodness from life to redemption to the knowledge of God. Remember that creation started out in darkness, but God brought light in one of His first acts. Jesus is called the “light of the world.”

Darkness on the other hand, tends to represent sin, evil and death. Although God gives all life, our broken world naturally lives in a state of darkness. John points out that only in Christ do we experience true life. For where there is not light, there can be no life. Jesus calls us out of darkness to be God’s light in the world. And we have nothing to fear when we take a stand for the unborn or the refugee because, as John writes so beautifully, the darkness cannot overpower Him.

We can know and stand firm in the fact that God created and desires all life to have the opportunity to come to know Him. We as believers are given the task to take the gospel to each and every tongue, tribe, and nation, and the darkness cannot overpower us, because He is in us! It is all connected!
