The Model of Prayer

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul instructs us, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Focusing on praying continually, what does that look like? How can we learn a habit of continual prayer?

Sometimes, I find it hard to quiet my mind enough to hear God’s voice and really focus on clear, intentional prayer. In the past I have scheduled specific time with God by putting it into a time slot at the beginning or at the end of my day.

What happens when I miss it? Is God angry because I missed the time with Him? Absolutely not! The great thing about our God is His patience and love for His children. He is not going anywhere! He is waiting for you to encounter Him.

One of my favorite scriptures, and something that changed my prayer life, is Matthew 6:6. Jesus is quoted saying, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Prayer between just the Father and ourself is crucial to a deep, meaningful prayer life. Learning to sit still or be on your knees in front of the Heavenly Father allows God to speak into you as you calm your mind in a quiet, private room.

Philippians 4:6 also tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” We are not called to a hopeless life of guessing when the blessings will come, or when the next storm will intrude our faith. Present all your requests to God, through petition and prayer. God Bless.
