God’s Gracious Gift

By Matt Wolff

My role as a father began on October 6, 2004, at the Women’s Renaissance Hospital in Oklahoma City. Preston Douglas Wolff immediately captured my heart as a gift from God the moment he entered this world. I recall the nurse walking Preston over to a warming station to give him a look over following his birth. I joined them and with an emotional “hello” I welcomed my son into the world. He graciously held my finger as if to say “hello” back to me. I immediately fell in love with him. Life simply changed as I held Preston and fed my son for the first time. It was a holy moment as this sacred gift lay in my arms.

I recall the pride of showing him off to family and friends as a new member of our family. Even though I felt overwhelmed at first at knowing I was responsible for this new creation God had given me, Preston was very patient with me. We quickly learned a new schedule as we maneuvered feeding times, diaper changes and hanging out together. My confidence grew and on October 2, 2006, Bennett Michael Wolff was born to us. By this point I had figured out most of the details of fatherhood, and I was a lot less nervous with baby number two. What a joy it has been to see these two little boys grow into fine young men.

As a father, what a joy to be on the front row of their lives in all their stages of growth, gaining wisdom and knowledge, and to see them take steps toward their heavenly Father. I have had the privilege of witnessing both their prayer commitments to Christ, and to personally baptize both my sons. Life doesn’t get any better than this! I could never express all my gratitude to the Lord at entrusting me with this opportunity to be their Dad. As my role continues to change in their lives, I will someday enjoy seeing all the ways the Lord blesses them!

“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him” Proverbs 23:24.
