Mothers are a Blessing from God
Psalm 127:3 proclaims, “Behold children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a blessing.”
Just as children are a blessed gift from God for their mothers; so also, is a godly mother a blessed gift to her children. A mother who walks faithfully with God creates a legacy of faith and spiritual fruit that continues from one generation to the next.
A godly mother plays a unique, essential role in the formation of her children at every phase of life. A recent Barna survey of Christian teenagers reveals that their mothers are the “go-to person” in the home for advice (78%), encouragement (75%), prayer (63%), and conversations about God (70%), the Bible (71%) or other faith questions (72%).
In my own life, God has surrounded me with several incredible mothers! My wife, Rebecca, is a godly example for our entire family and goes out of her way to put our needs above her own. My mom, Terri, made countless sacrifices for me growing up and has been a wonderful support to me throughout my adult life and ministry. My mother-in-law, Carol, continues to be an example of a godly woman for our family and others as she has throughout decades in ministry and education. And then, of course, there was my sweet grandmother Teresia (my “Mema”), who passed away just a few months ago. Mema gave me my first Bible, taught me about prayer, and imparted a love for the Church in me from a young age. I miss her dearly, but am forever grateful for the many years I had with her love, influence, and cooking!
How have you seen Christ’s love demonstrated through a mom in your life—whether your own mother or other exemplary mothers who have loved you and been a godly example in your life?
