Seasonal Transitions
Spring is gradually transitioning into the warmer days of summer. We prepare by packing up our sweaters and pants, exchanging them for t-shirts and shorts. We put away our pastel eggs and flowers and proudly display stars and stripes. A few short months ago, it was unbearably cold. We couldn’t imagine it being warm enough to comfortably wear such light clothing, and our Christmas tree seemed to feel just right as it stood near the window with its twinkling lights. Now, here we are, moving into a new season.
Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes that “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…” It’s fascinating that God created the world with natural seasons and allows us to experience personal “seasons.” Whether you’re adjusting to the arrival of a baby, preparing your high school graduate to leave the nest, starting a new job, or adapting to the rhythms of retirement—just as surely as we experience spring after winter, our present circumstances will likewise transition. Genesis 8:22 tells us that “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” God displays His faithfulness through the natural seasons, and we can also rest assured of His faithfulness through the many changes and shifts in our lives. Gordon T. Smith, in his book Courage and Calling, observes that “transition is one of the givens in our lives, and we only live well, we only manage our lives well, when we manage these transitions well.” So, how do we manage life transitions well? Psalm 1:2–3 states that “those who delight in the law of the Lord, and who meditate on His law day and night... that person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” As we prayerfully anticipate a fruitful summer, let’s be reminded of the Lord’s faithfulness and diligently meditate upon His Word. Then, like trees planted by water, we will flourish in every season to come.
