He Loves Us

A few thousand young adults gathered for Collegiate Week this year around a simple theme: Love. Love is a word we hear often, but this week, we were reminded of a love that is completely different from what the world offers.

One of the most powerful moments came during worship when the band sang an original song, “He Loves You.” The song is a simple reminder that God’s love for us isn’t dependent on what we do. He loves us because He is God. He has adopted us, accepted us, forgiven us, and chosen us. We are wanted and treasured by him. The chorus says, “He loves you more than you will ever know.”

The first time the band sang the song, they invited us to simply take it in and to join them when we were ready. As they sang the words: adopted, treasured, forgiven, accepted, I looked around the room and saw young adults with tears streaming down their faces. Others sat quietly taking it in or stood with arms open. Each person was hearing the truth of how deeply they are loved by God.

We live in a world that tells us our value comes from what we accomplish, how we look, or how well we perform. The gospel tells us something completely different. “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We did nothing to deserve His love. We did nothing to earn it. He simply loved us.

As the week went on, we sang the song multiple times. Each time, the truth of God’s love seemed to settle more deeply into the hearts of the students in the room. With each reminder of who God is and what He has done, the joy seemed to grow. There is a deep joy that comes when we stop striving to prove our worth and simply receive the truth that we are fully known, fully accepted, and deeply loved by God.
