One Generation to Another
“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:3-4).
This is one of my favorite Psalms, both because of what it says about our God and because of what it says about us, His people. I’m grateful to serve in a church that values the faith and contributions of every generation, from our youngest children to our oldest adults. The first two Sundays of October have been a perfect example as our Kids Choir joined us last week to sing Jesus Calms the Storm and the Student Choir sings Not to Us this morning. This is what we see David saying in Psalm 145:3, “One generation commends Your works to another.” Notice that it doesn’t say the older generation is always proclaiming the Lord to their descendants. That’s vital of course, but it goes the other direction too; our young voices can speak and sing the goodness of the Lord to their parents and grandparents too. These songs are beautiful examples of our kids and students testifying of who God is and what He has done, and I hope it’s encouraged you as much as it has me.
When we hear a musical testimony like this, how should we respond? I think David gives us the answer in the following verses: “They speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty – and I will meditate on Your wonderful works. They tell of the power of Your awesome works – and I will proclaim Your great deeds. They celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness” (Psalm 145:5-7).
In those three verses, we see our proper response to the testimony of other believers, whether they’re our elders or our kids. As they speak of the Lord’s majesty, we meditate on what He has done. As we hear about the power of God’s works, we join in proclaiming His greatness. We gather today to worship the Lord together as the united body of Christ, and my prayer is that we will join our voices together as we celebrate His goodness and joyfully sing of His righteousness this morning. Let’s sing together!
“My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise His holy name forever and ever” (Psalm 145:21).
