Go
In RAs and GAs, we are learning about Hiram Bingham, the first missionary to the Hawaiian Islands in 1820. We have learned how he created a written language and then started schools to teach the people how to read and write in the Hawaiian language, all the while sharing the love of Christ. In 1824, the Hawaiian King, Kamehameha, traveled to England to meet the British King and died of measles. Bingham remembered Kamehameha saying he wanted five more years to himself, and then he would become a Christian. Having died before he ever met Christ, Bingham thought, “How clear it is that education and civilization without a firm belief in God’s Word will accomplish little or nothing for the lost.” It was then that he started translating the Bible into the Hawaiian language, and revival swept through the Hawaiian Islands.
As followers of Christ, we are all called to share our faith, but not everyone is called to “go,” and the call can look different now because the world looks different.
I visited our brother Johnny and his family in China and have watched how he ministered to the people group he was called to. When they could no longer stay and moved back to the US, I was again blessed to be part of a team to travel with him to where the diaspora people group is now. He ministered the same there as he did in their home country.
I have been part of the training that he helped develop and lead called WIN (Welcoming International Neighbors). Johnny now does all of this as a Mesa Global Missionary, while shepherding and supervising over 40 other missionaries who are spread out over the continent, engaging the least-reached peoples and places of North America with the Good News of Jesus. Mesa Global is one of our Mission Partners. Because the world is not like it used to be, and for the diaspora now living in our country who may never step into a church, many are called to “GO” to them. If you would like to support Johnny in this ministry, go online and choose the dropdown Mesa Global.
