Always in our Hearts
Memorial Day gives us the opportunity to honor those who surrendered their lives in service to our country. As Will Graham, the grandson of Billy Graham writes,
“The message of Memorial Day is one of sacrifice. On this day, we honor those who—throughout the history of our nation—paid the ultimate price to secure and defend our freedom. These were fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, who said goodbye to their families, never to return. It’s our honor to keep their memory alive.”
Memorial Day is also an appropriate time to remember all the loved ones we’ve lost, and to give thanks for the blessing of having them in our lives. I believe the love we share with our dearest loved ones—our spouse, our children, our parents, our brothers and sisters in family and in Christ—is the kind of love the Bible describes as enduring forever.
In 1 Corinthians 13, Scripture says that our Christ-centered love for others “always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” This kind of love “never fails.” Moreover, as the end of the chapter proclaims, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
As we observe Memorial Day this year, may we give thanks for those who gave their lives in service of our country and our families. May we also give thanks and remember our loved ones who have gone to be with the Lord and whose memories will always be in our hearts. May we give thanks most of all for the One who laid down His life willingly for you and me, as an act of love and service for all humanity and to bring us from death into eternal life: “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
