Walking in Freedom
In John 8:36, Jesus says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This freedom is not about doing whatever we please, but it is about being released from the bondage of sin that captures our hearts and minds. Before Christ, we were in spiritual chains, following our desires and rebelling against God’s design. But in Christ, we are set free to become who we were truly created to be: image-bearers of God living in fellowship with Him. Later in Scripture, Paul writes in Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” This verse reminds believers that Christ’s death and resurrection are not just historical events, but they are the foundation of how we are to carry ourselves as we walk in freedom. Walking in freedom means living daily in the power of the gospel. We should respond to His grace with joyful obedience, empowered by the Holy Spirit. I should add a caution that Christian freedom is not a license for selfishness. Paul adds in the same passage in Galatians 5:13, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” True freedom leads to love, not indulgence. It moves us to lay down our own lives for the good of others, just as Christ did for us.
Walking in freedom means walking in the Spirit that gives us power, love, and self-discipline. Freedom in Christ includes liberation from fear and anxiety. Romans 8:15 says, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship…” As children of God, we no longer live under the crushing weight of condemnation or the fear of judgment. We are secure in the love of our Heavenly Father, and that security frees us to walk boldly and joyfully. To walk in freedom, then, is to walk in Christ. Submit yourself to Him, and He will make your path straight!
