“I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.”
As my family spent time away the last couple of weeks, I found myself echoing the same words Paul used to address the Romans: “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you!”
It has been 40 years since a group followed God’s call to plant South Tulsa Baptist Church, and 2018 has been a banner year of thankfulness. We have celebrated the strongest giving year on record along with paying off nearly a decade’s worth of debt. We’ve seen many join us, and watched tremendous spiritual growth take place among our families, students, and children. Our missions and local outreach have also grown exponentially.
Though we do have much to be thankful for, I also believe the task before us is greater than it has ever been. After a little more than two years serving here as your pastor, I believe it is time to have some honest and prayerful collaboration that leads to action. The goal is not to make sweeping changes or to neglect the needs of our current membership, but rather to walk together into the future with complete obedience.
Here are some of the questions we are asking:
-Our numbers and giving have increased, but are we actually growing?
-How do we follow God’s leadership to strengthen our weaknesses while also helping our strengths to become even stronger?
-What will our church look like in 3, 5, and 10 years if we do not address the growing generational gaps?
-In what ways will God’s call and commission for our church make us a bit uncomfortable?
My prayer is that the next decade and beyond will be defined even further by the last words of Romans 1:8: “…the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.”
