“Pro-Life” in Every Sense of the Word

Eric Costanzo

To be pro-life is to affirm the value of “all life,” including both the unborn and the born.

As Russell Moore writes: “No human life is worthless, regardless of skin color, age, disability, or economic status . . . We need Sundays like this because human dignity is a spiritual issue. It’s a spiritual issue because the gospel grounds human dignity in Jesus Christ himself . . . To deny human dignity, then, is to deny Christ himself.”

Abortion is the main focus of this Sunday, however. Abortion is a direct affront to the value of personhood and the image of God that each human being holds, beginning at conception.

It is important to state clearly here, however, that our God is a redeeming God. He graciously and mercifully offers His love and forgiveness to all who belong to Him. His grace extends to this sinful practice as well.

Globally more than 50 million babies are aborted each year, including more than 1 million in the U.S. Last year, the number of abortions dropped in nearly every state nationwide. Unfortunately, Oklahoma was not one of those states; our abortion number increased.

With all of this in mind, below is some helpful information, along with Scriptures, that demonstrate God’s incredible design of full human life as it exists within the womb.

#1: Conception – life begins and DNA is established. “You guided my conception and formed me in the womb.” Job 10:10

#2: 2 Months – All major organs present, arms and legs are formed, fingerprints developed. “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

#3: 3-6 Months – Can hear sounds and see light, feel and respond to pain, lungs are developing. The brain, nerves and muscles work together. “Ears that hear and eyes that see—the Lord has made them both.” Proverbs 20:12

#4: 7-8 Months – All senses are developed, will double in weight, brain and nervous system maturing. “Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me.” Psalm 71:6

#5: 9 Months – Birth! “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.” Psalm 127:3
