Parenting With Purpose

Zack Hudson

This past Friday we held our first Parenting with Purpose Conference which I believe was an immense blessing for our families that were involved. If you missed our conference, we do have our sessions available on our website at http://southtulsa.org/parenting-ministry and I would encourage you to find some time to watch them.

One of the reminders from this weekend was that the behavior we see coming out of our children is often a reflection of something taking place in their heart. As we guide our children and grandchildren, we need to keep this in mind as we love and train them up because man looks at the outward actions and pronounces judgement, but God looks at the heart. Jesus teaches in Matthew 15:18-19, “But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. For from the heart come evil thoughts…” He goes on to list several evil acts which originate from within.  All of us would be wise to consider our actions and inactions as a reflection of what’s taking place inside of us. I know I’m not displaying the evil acts that Jesus spoke of in this passage, but for me, I’m often more concerned about my inaction. The greatest commandments given by our Lord were not about the things we shouldn’t do, but things we are to do – Love God and Love People. Is my love for God and People being displayed in my life each day? Am I taking time to know my neighbors and coworkers around me and praying for their spiritual condition? Am I praying for boldness to communicate the Good News and hope I have in Christ?

I found myself challenged and encouraged this weekend. I’m thankful I’m not tasked to parent alone. I have a wonderful spouse, church family and relationship with Christ that helps me in the process. May you live lives this week that show and communicate the Gospel that has transformed your heart within.
