Mary Ann’s Bio

Mary Ann has served South Tulsa Baptist Church with her husband, Philip Stephens, since August 1990. She officially became a staff member in 2000. As Music Associate, Mary Ann coordinates the Children’s Choir Ministry, directs the 4-6 grade choir, children’s and youth handbell choirs, ladies and mixed ensembles and the orchestra. She also directs the annual Christmas Dinner Theater and the Summer Music Activity for Kids (SMAK) and PreSMAK music camps during the summer.

Raised in a Christian home in Seminole, Oklahoma, Mary Ann accepted Christ as Savior at age six; felt a call into full time ministry at age nine; and the Lord affirmed her call to the music ministry at age 16. She began her ministry as Minister of Music and Youth at Harvey Road Baptist Church in Seminole, Oklahoma at the age of 18. After graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music with Honors degree, Mary Ann also graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological, Ft. Worth, Texas with a Master of Church Music degree. During seminary, Mary Ann served Richardson Heights Baptist Church, Richardson, Texas as Music Associate.

Mary Ann met and married Philip during seminary and has enjoyed serving churches in dual positions. Following seminary, they served Baptist Temple Church, San Antonio, Texas for nine years before coming to STBC in 1990. 

Their son, David, M.D., ophthalmologist/eye surgeon, practices at Tyson Eye in Ft. Myers, FL. He received his education/training at Oklahoma Baptist University, University of Oklahoma Medical School, Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Fall, SD. David is married to Jenny, who has a Master’s in Nursing. They have one son, William Dutch (Will), born August, 2019. Their daughter, Sarah, D.M.A., is chairmen of the voice department at Visible Music College, Memphis, TN. She received her education at Oklahoma Baptist University, Baylor University, and the University of Memphis. She is married to Andrew, who is adjunct professor of voice at Union University and is currently completing his D.M.A.

Mary Ann is passionate about sharing the love of Christ and serving and encouraging others to use their God given gifts through the medium of music. She also has a deep love for missions and has served in Dominica, Mexico, Canada and Australia, as well as, local music mission projects.

Mary Ann’s life verse is Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.” Other than conducting, Mary Ann enjoys cooking, decorating for holidays, seeing new places, visiting with friends and enjoying her wonderful children.
