Love and Grace and Peace
Each year after VBS, I spend the next SEVERAL months with the music stuck in my head. Even though this year looked a little different, it was not an exception to the rule. One of my favorite songs this year is titled “Build My Life on You.” The opening lyrics say, “When I feel afraid, like walls are gonna cave around me, I think about the way your love and grace and peace have found me. I remember what you said, you will never ever leave me. So, I’m holding on to all your promises.” These words are with a lesson on Jesus’ resurrection and promise to be with us till the end of the age as told in the book of Matthew.
This year, as you know, there has been (and continues to be) so much unknown. While I am not 100% a planner and can be very flexible, I have not been a fan of this limbo state. It has caused nervousness, anxiety, and stress about right decisions for many different things. But, through it all, it is that opening line that keeps coming to mind. “When I feel afraid…your love and grace and peace have found me.” Jesus’ life is defined by these three words. Every encounter He has within scripture contains these attributes as they are intimately intertwined. He came to earth and died because He loves us. He gives us grace by forgiving us each and every day. He wraps us in peace through difficult times.
In John 15:9, Jesus commands His followers to “love one another as I have loved you.” In order to do this, we must follow Jesus’ example and extend the same grace and peace to the world. Because of the current unknown, many people are anxious, worried, hurting, and lost. As Christ followers called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, I am praying we emanate these Christ-like characteristics. I pray we love our neighbor as ourselves, we extend grace and then more grace, and we are a place of peaceful refuge.
