Liberty

Dru Finley

No one in this country needs to be told what the Fourth of July is, but many need to be reminded of its significance! It is indeed a special time around our entire nation where people gather together with family and friends around food and a fireworks display. But, if we fail to recognize this day’s founding purpose we will miss the great significance of this day! The Fourth is a wonderful day that represents the birth of a great nation. It is a day that we celebrate because a people declared freedom from tyranny, and that freedom has been passed on to us! Freedom is a celebration because within it lies liberty.

There are few things as precious as liberty. But, it’s hard for a person to realize the great gift of liberty unless they have suffered under a tyrannical ruler. “Give me liberty or give me death” are emphatic words spoken by Patrick Henry to declare that without liberty there is not much reason for life.

As Christians, there is a great correlation for us. Because of the cross we can declare liberty! Through Christ, the great liberator, we have been given birth! We have been given life that came not from our doing, but from the love of an omnipotent God. We have experienced freedom from the tyrannical ruler who desires nothing more than our death and suffering. Christ has broken the chains of this evil ruler to give us liberty. Again, this comes from the power of a loving God, not from our bankrupt efforts.

As we celebrate the freedom and liberty of the country we live in, think of the eternal liberty that is provided to us through Christ. On this Fourth of July, celebrate liberty for our nation, but more so the liberty of our soul. The picture of liberty that we have as a nation should help us turn our eyes to a gracious God who has given us the greatest liberty of all!

Thank you Dru, powerful and timely truths to always keep before us! Liberty as a Nation and as Believers in Christ has begotten the Evangelical outreach that God desires as well, because we are free to share our Lord and help those from foreign lands/immigrants as no other country has had before us or likely will ever! No wonder we give thanks and rejoice! Thank you for reminding us it's so much more than a happy picnic with loved ones, or fabulous fireworks displays...it's what they represent that gives us a lasting joy in a God who has been so very good to us in so many ways! Happy Independence Day!
