Attitude of Gratitude

Debbie Steen

At the beginning of the year, many people make “New Year’s Resolutions.” I have learned that IF I make any, I never seem to keep them for long. God placed on my heart, some years back, to seek a specific “word” to focus on during the year. This quality or character word becomes important in my devotion time and journaling. For 2019, I have been convicted that I am not always GRATEFUL. I take too many blessings for granted. The teacher in me tends to want to make an acrostic out of my words that will serve to remind me of action points. On my bathroom mirror you will find:

G - God’s Goodness
R - Respect Others
A - Attitude
T - Treasure Each Moment
E - Everyone & Everything
F - Family-Friends-Foe
U - Unity
L - Love Life

In Colossians 2:6-7 we read, “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted, being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, overflowing with gratitude.” Wow! Overflowing with gratitude.

May I take time each day to look for God’s goodness that surrounds me; and express my gratitude to Him through prayer and praise. I need to check my attitude continually throughout the day and make sure I’m showing respect and thankfulness to everyone who crosses my path. Let me seek unity in my relationships with family, friends and others who may not always agree with me. We do not know the number of days that we have been given. Let us not waste a single one. One of my favorite quotes is, “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” Let me live in the present and always treasure the moments of this journey. May I be ready to share the reason that I am grateful. Jesus Christ saved me, walks with me and is growing me daily.

Do you have a word for the year? I would love to hear about yours.
