40 Days After
When I first began planning our post-Easter sermon series, I had no idea we would be living in a completely different world once Easter arrived. The goal of this series — “40 Days After” — is to look at all the biblical events that took place between Christ’s resurrection and ascension, as recorded in the Four Gospels and Acts.
For 40 days after the resurrection, the first followers of Jesus were scrambling to adjust to their own new world. Things had become both confusing and dangerous for them; some were filled with doubts, others with regrets. When Jesus began appearing to His followers during this time, He cut through the confusion as light breaks into darkness. He forgave their failures, relieved their doubts, and restored them to effectiveness in ministry. Jesus also gave some of His most important teaching during this time, including the “great commissions,” final instructions, and the promise of the Holy Spirit.
With all that we have experienced in the last few weeks, this series will have a little different look than I imagined. Somewhat coincidentally, we will begin “40 Days After” right around the 40-day mark since the COVID-19 coronavirus was first diagnosed in our city. Thankfully, I gave up believing in coincidences a long time ago. Nothing surprises God, and He knew exactly what we would be facing as we begin this series. As we will see, our “new normal” (which we have yet to completely discover) adds many new dimensions to applying the Scriptures we will cover in this series.
Join us in April and May, as we journey together from the empty tomb to Christ’s ascension — and everything in between — during “40 Days After.”
